Beating the Boredom – My Top 5 Tips
Currently, life is moving at a much slower pace and like many, I’ve found I’ve got much more time on my hands than I am used to.
Confession: I’m TERRIBLE at having little to do. My mind works at a million miles an hour. Not having demanding deadlines and big projects to occupy myself with has been a shock to the system. I’ve also come to realise that boredom is a MAJOR drinking trigger for me. I’ve found myself constantly battling the internal whisper of well there’s nothing else to do…
To beat the boredom and stay sober, I’ve found the following activities to be of great help! I hope they help you too.
Reading, reading, then reading some more: Reading is by far my favourite pass time. There is nothing quite like losing yourself in a good book. I’m also using this time to find new blogs to read. If you have any to recommend, it would be greatly appreciated!
Beyond Hedonism’s Instagram page: I always need some form of a project to be working on, so I recently began a Beyond Hedonism Instagram page. It’s proven to be a great way to connect with more sober people and certainly helps to keep me on track. Whenever I have a craving, I open the app and have a quick read through the sober community’s words of wisdom. Check out my Instagram page here (it’s still very new!)
Playing Cards: An oldie but a goodie! I and my partner have an ongoing competition of favourite card game. It’s the perfect excuse to put down the devices and engage in a little friendly competition. If you live alone, there are plenty of online games to be played!
Learning new skills: I’m passionate about learning so I’m using now as the perfect time to get to grips with new skills including learning French and knitting. Are there any new skills you’re giving a go?
Exercise: Admittedly, I’ve not been quite as good at this as I should be. However, when I do psych myself up to get moving’ and a shakin’, always feel much better!
If you’re a front-line worker who is wishing you had the time to be bored, please know that YOU ARE AMAZING and we are forever indebted to you.
